Are your kilims ethically made?
Our kilims are handwoven under respectful and fair conditions in Egypt. We work directly with small, family-run weaving workshops in the Nile Delta and place great importance on fair pay and supportive working relationships.
Personal contact with our weavers is important to us – many of them have been with us since the very beginning of Nilo Kilim. The designs are created through mutual exchange and build on the knowledge and experience of everyone involved.
It is important to us that not only our customers are satisfied with our kilims, but also the people who make them with great skill and care. Because only under fair conditions can a product be created that is convincing in terms of quality and character.
Need help choosing the right kilim?
Yes, we are happy to advise you! If you are unsure about which design, which colors or which size suits your room, we can help you – just write to us or drop by.
You can also test all kilims marked as “new” in the online store directly in your home using augmented reality (AR): simply click on the link below the product photos and view the rug in 3D in your room using your cell phone camera.
If you’re in Vienna, feel free to visit the studio! You can see the kilims in person and even take one home. And if it doesn’t quite fit, no worries – you have 14 days to return it.
How is a kilim made?
The kilim is a sturdy, flat-woven rug made of wool and cotton. Our kilims are produced on wooden looms using the slit weaving technique, in which dyed sheep’s wool is woven into a cotton base fabric.
The handwork is always visible. The kilim is not a uniform machine-made product, it does not have perfect straight lines and angles. The imperfections and irregularities of this woven carpet, the “beauty of the imperfect”, are proof of its authenticity.
How do I care for my kilim?
Sheep’s wool is easy to care for and stain resistant due to its surface structure. The natural fat content of sheep’s wool surrounds the fibres. The kilim should be vacuumed regularly with the correct attachment (without a brush). The kilim should be vacuumed regularly with the correct attachment (without a brush). It is better to vacuum more often, but at half power. If cleaning is necessary, we recommend carpet cleaning or hand washing (max. 30 degrees) with a wool re-greasing detergent. Stain removal: Immediately dab the affected area with warm running water, never rub. Use a sponge and some liquid soft soap.
